Smith Powers Keene State to 3-2 Win Over Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.--Reigning Little East Conference Offensive Player of the Week Sami Smith had a hand in all three goals as the Keene State College field hockey team beat Williams College for just the third time ever with a 3-2 road win over the Ephs on Tuesday night.

Tale of the Tape

  • The Owls defeated Williams for the first time since 2013.  The Owls' only other win over Williams came in 2009.
  • The Ephs outshot KSC 21-16 and had a 9-3 edge in penalty corners, but KSC goale Gwen Thayer made eight saves and Marita Brothers made a defensive save for the Owls.
  • The teams combined five goals on the night, four of which were unassisted.

First Half Highlights

  • The teams traded blows in the early going, as Williams goalie Margaret Thayer saved from Sami Smith, and Thayer made a stop on Hannah Goodrick.
  • Williams got the scoring going in the 17th minute, with Alex Johnson scoring her first of the year.
  • It took KSC just six minutes to respond, as Smith set up Erica Stauffer with 12 minutes left in the first half.  It was the second straight year for Stauffer scoring against Williams.
  • Brothers kept the score tied at one, making a defensive save on Alex Bennett just seconds after the goal.
  • Julia Babbitt and Brittney Cardente tested Draper before the break, while Williams' Kit Rosen had a shot stopped by Thayer in the final two minutes.

Second Half Highlights

  • Smith needed just two minutes of the second half to put the Owls in front, slamming an unassisted tally for her fourth of the year.
  • A flurry of action followed, but Smith increased the lead to 3-1 with another unassisted goal at the 52:32 mark.
  • The goal would prove crucial, as the Ephs pulled one back with three minutes left through Hannah Goodrick, but Thayer stood tall, making a save off a shot by Alex Bennett as time wound down.  
  • Williams had a penalty corner with 90 seconds remaining, but could not get a shot off.
