Owls Dominate Pride, 4-1

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Three goals in 10 second-half minutes gave the Keene State College field hockey team a 4-1 non-conference win over Springfield College on Thursday night.

Tale of The Tape

  • Sami Smith netted two goals and set up another, moving over the 60 goal plateau for her career.  The senior already has seven goals and three assists in the first four games of the season, and has the game winning goal in all three KSC wins.
  • Erica Stauffer also had a goal and an assist, while Julia Babbit had the Owls' other goal and Jensyn Dandeneau set up a goal.
  • Gwendolyn Thayer played the first 60:18 in the cage and made one save; Jordan LaRaus also made one stop in 9:42 of action.
  • The Owls outshot the Pride 19-5, including a 13-0 advantage in the first half.

 

First Half Highlights

 

  • Kendal Brown registered KSC's first shot of the evening that whistled wide in the 11th minute.  
  • Smith gave the Owls the lead in the 18th, converting Dandeneau's pass past Springfield goalie Emmalie Drake
  • The Owls peppered Drake with shots the rest of the half, but could not find the net again, as she made consecutive stops on Smith, and had another save on Stauffer in the final minute of the half.  Stauffer saw the rebound stopped on a defensive save.

 

Second Half Highlights

  • Smith turned provider in the 53rd minute, setting up Julia Babbitt for a 2-0 lead.  KSC kept the pressure on after the goal, earning three straight penalty corners and forcing Springfield into a timeout.  
  • Less than a minute after play resumed, the Owls were up 3-0, as Stauffer passed for Smith to score her seventh goal of the year in the 57th minute.
  • Five minutes later, it was 4-0, as Stauffer scored her third of the year unassisted.
  • The Pride brokeup the shutout with 1:48 left, as Jamie Accosta scored following a penalty corner.
