SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Keene State College field hockey team received a hat trick from Kayla Klein and two goals from Nina Bruno on their way to a 5-2 victory over Springfield College on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.

How It Happened

The Owls scored twice within the first five minutes and were in command throughout, improving to 3-0.  KSC put immediate pressure on the Pride, forcing two early penalty corners, one of which they converted into a tally when Ally McCall fed Klein for her first of the game.  The lead was extended just a few minutes later, as Bruno scored her first goal of the season for a 2-0 advantage with just 4:29 gone.

Springfield had chances to get back in the game as the first half progressed, but KSC goalie Rachel Loseby kept them off the board, saving Amanda Nusbaum twice and Gabby Inkel once in the 11th minute.  A defensive save in the 21st minute from Hailey Beaupre again prevented the Pride from scoring, and five minutes later the Owls tacked on another.  Erica Stauffer and Mia Brickley fed Klein for her second and a 3-0 lead at the 27:36 mark.  Loseby stoned Kyra Ashe and Taylor Low in a two minute span late in the first half as KSC went into the break leading 3-0.  The Owls have led at the half in all three of their contests this season.

A fast start to the second half helped put the game away for KSC.  The Owls had a pair of penalty corner opportunities that went for naught, but capitalized on a third chance as Klein completed the hat trick at the 39:13 mark.  The teams exchanged chances for the better part of the rest of the half.  The Pride were able to get on the board in the 58th minute when Holly Rivers scored her fourth of the season only to see Bruno find the back of the cage two minutes later as KSC restored the lead to 5-1.  A goal from Belle Copponi with less than 30 seconds left set the final margin.

Loseby (3-0) earned the win for Keene State, making eight stops on nine shots in 60:20.  Jordan LaRaus played the final 9:40 and made a pair of saves.  Emmalie Drake played the first half and took the loss for the Pride.

Penalty Strokes

• The Owls had a 14-13 advantage in shots on goal and had one more penalty corner than Springfield (10-9).
• Klein has already doubled her goal total and surpassed her point total from last season.
• Bruno now has five points in three games this season and 35 points in 26 career games.
• Keene State evened the all-time series with Springfield at 13-13.  They have won each of their last two visits to the Pride.
