- Franklin Pierce: 1-0
How It Happened
A big first half that saw the Ravens manage just seven shots yet score five times proved to be more than enough to give FPU coach Marissa Shaw her first career victory. Three of the five tallies came in the opening 10 minutes as the Owls found themselves under pressure nearly right away. Julia Rooijakkers carried the ball into the circle and fired through traffic and past
Molly Edmark to get the Ravens on the board quickly and they were far from done, as a pair of goals in less than two minutes just moments later made it 3-0. Beck's first score at the 8:26 mark came after she tipped home Meghan Winn's shot from the top of the circle, and then just 1:27 later, Alicia Hottleman found the freshman on a crossing pass for her second tally. In need of something, Keene State generated a chance through
Nina Bruno in the late stages of the opening quarter, but FPU goalkeeper Olivia Barnes kept it out.
The Ravens scored twice more in quick succession in the second quarter to blow the game wide open, as Alannah Johnson and Karly Holgerson connected with 7:46 left in the half before just a little over five minutes later, Winn roofed the ball after a scramble in front of KSC keeper
Victoria Watson's cage. Watson saw action in the second and fourth quarters, making three saves on five shots.
Molly Edmark started and made four saves while playing the first and third frames.
Franklin Pierce actually managed four more shots in the final 30 minutes than they did in the opening half, but scored only once, as Watson and Edmark combined to make seven stops after the break.
Jordyn Martin also made a defensive save on a try by the Ravens' Annie Corbett in the fourth quarter.
Keene State was held to four shots in the game, three of which came from Bruno. FPU goalkeepers Barnes (3 saves, 45:00) and MacKenzie Potvin (1 save, 15:00) combined for the shutout.
Penalty Strokes
- Franklin Pierce had a 9-3 edge in corner chances, including the only two of the first half.
- KSC and FPU have played head-to-head in several other sports, but this marked the first all-time meeting between the two schools in field hockey.
Up Next
- Keene State makes a trip further east (and north) to Henniker when they take on New England College (9-10, 4-3 NECC in 2019) on Friday, April 9 at 4:00 p.m. The Pilgrims are led by 2004 Keene State graduate Carly Sweeney, who played for current Owl coach Amy Watson.
- This is currently the only game a young Franklin Pierce team had scheduled on the spring slate. The Ravens went 8-11, 7-7 in the Northeast-10 in 2019 and graduated seven seniors. They have seven newcomers and just two seniors on this year's roster. Five of FPU's goals tonight were scored by freshmen and the other by a sophomore.
