How It Happened
Keene State tallied five goals in the first quarter as they had no trouble beating the Great Northeast Athletic Conference's Blazers, who are coming off a 2-14 campaign in 2022 after a 9-9 mark in 2021. In addition to the goals for Daileanes, who scored in her collegiate debut on Friday in KSC's 2-0 win at Springfield College, and Piasecki, the Owls also received scores from Ella Rose DiMatteo (her first career goal),
Grace Bazin (her first goal at Keene State),
Irini Stefanakos, and
Molly Murray.
The Owls were on the board just 2:30 into the game when Bazin cashed in off a feed from Daileanes, who added an assist to her early-season ledger. Stefanakos tacked on another three minutes later, and Murray five minutes after that on a penalty stroke - and that more or less was the story of the afternoon. Piasecki and Daileanes scored 81 seconds apart before the end of the quarter to make it 5-0, and Daileanes added another only 1:42 into the second as KSC had a half dozen on the board in 16:42. Ella Rose DiMatteo, who registered her first collegiate point on Daileanes' first goal of the afternoon, made it even sweeter when she added her initial collegiate marker in the 19th minute off a pass from
Emma Cahoon.
KSC outshot Elms 14-0 in the first quarter, 18-0 in the first half, and 23-1 in the game. The Blazers' only shot came with 8:02 to go, and went wide. Their only corner came with 3:04 left.
Daileanes finished with two goals and an assist on the afternoon to lead the way for the Owls, who got 12 reserves action in the contest.
Molly Edmark picked up a win in goal, not needing to make a save. Katelyn Volk made 11 saves on the afternoon in the loss for Elms.
Penalty Strokes
- It was the first ever meeting between the two teams. The Owls' last eight-goal effort came at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth last October 17 in a five-goal victory.
- KSC's last 2-0 start came in 2018 when they beat the University of New England at home and Lasell University (OT) on the road, both by 2-1 scores. The Owls finished 18-7 that year, 10-2 in the conference, and reached the second round of the NCAA tournament. It is also the last time they won the conference tournament.
- Keene State has six different goal scorers in the first two games.
- Elms was picked 12th in the 13-team GNAC preseason poll; Johnson and Wales University (R.I.) was named the league favorite.
