KEENE, N.H. – The Keene State College athletic department named
Ai Chung of the women's ice hockey team and
Valerie Luizzi of the women's basketball team this week's Owl Athletes of the Week. This week's selection encompassed action from November 24 through November 30.
Ai Chung, a sophomore goaltender from Kaohsiung City, Taiwan continued to impress for the Owls on the ice as she was named the Little East Conference goaltender of the week for the third over five possible weeks to be selected for the recognition. In the one game for the Owls on the week, Chung had a strong performance against a tough Williams College opponent, who was receiving votes from the United States College Hockey Online (USCHO) rankings with 56 saves in the contest. Following a slow first period with only 10 saves, Chung made 23 saves in each the second and third periods for the Owls. Chung also held the Ephs scoreless over their six power play opportunities as she made 11 saves.
Valerie Luizzi, a senior guard from Colchester, Connecticut, had another great game for the Owls as she inched closer to the 1,000 milestone with her performance in the Owls' 78-70 win over Worcester State University on Tuesday to move to 5-2 to open the season. Luizzi finished the day with 17 points, shooting 6-for-12 (50%) from the field, 3-for-8 (37.5%) from three, and a perfect 2-for-2 at the line. To go with her board and assist, Luizzi also had a game-high six steals, bringing her season average to 3.3 steals per game and an average of 5 steals per game over the past four contests. Luizzi moved up the record books in the contest as she moved into 23rd in program history with 941 points, tied for 11th with 150 career threes made, became the 11th Owl to reach 150 steals as she currently has 153, and is currently 13th in career games started with 80 starts.
