WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, VT. 2/19/10 - Keene State men's and
women's swim teams began defense of their New England
Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA)
Championships with impressive performances at the Upper Valley
Aquatic Center in White River Junction, Vt. on Friday.
Both teams had record setting swims to move into first place in
their respective standings. The KSC men lead the 12-team
field with 238 points. Bentley University is in second with
194 points. On the women's side, Keene State holds a slim
337-305 lead over the Falcons.
KSC Coach Jack Fabian was very pleased with his
teams' performance. "We had some very impressive swims; some of the
times were right up there with the best in Division III this
season. Hopefully, we can carry the momentum into the second
day."
The Keene men won seven races and set eight school records in
the first day of the three-day meet.
Senior Cody Larrimore (Trappe, Md.) won the 50
free (20.78) and 100 fly (50.35) with record-setting times.
Juniors Connor Pennoyer (Norwalk, Conn.) and
D.J. Collis (Laconia, N.H.) placed second (51.36)
and fourth (52.28) respectively in the 100 fly.
Junior Dan Morse (Hope, R.I.) won the 500 free
with a time of 4:43.12. Junior Lucas Pozzetta
(Merrimack, N.H.) was right behind him in second place
(4:48.07).
Senior captain Domingo Rose (Nashua, N.H.) won
the 50 breast (26.27) and freshman Marc Marois
(Derry, N.H.) came in first in the 200 I.M. (1:58.10).
Freshman Ray Estrada (Bellingham, Mass.) was
second in the 200 I.M. (2:00.59).
Sophomore Harrison Hollingsworth (Derry, N.H.)
set a school record with his second place finish in the 200 back
(1:53.27). He also set new KSC marks in the 50 and 100 back
races. Sophomore Justin Churchill (North
Springfield, Vt.) was fifth in the 200 back (1:58.84.)
The Owls won both relays in record-setting times. The team of
Rose, Hollingsworth, Pennoyer, and Larrimore won the 200 free relay
(1:24.05). The foursome also won the 400 medley relay with a time
of 3:25.89.
The Keene State women came into the first day of competition
trailing Bentley by 79 points after last weekend's diving
events. The Owls overcame the deficit and the Falcons depth
by winning six races and setting six records, including one meet
mark.
Making her first trip to the meet, freshman Kaila
Umbarger (Chelmsford, Mass.) won the 50 free with a time
of 23.79. Her time in the preliminaries (23.71) was a KSC and
meet record.
Senior Jackie Foster (Goffstown, N.H.) won the
500 free with a KSC record time of 5:06.67. Junior
Jessica Laidley (Brockton, Mass.) placed third
(5:19.00).
Sophomores Maureen O'Leary (Nashua, N.H.) and
Jillian Whitaker (Gilford, N.H.) took second
in the 100 fly (58.23) and 50 breast (30.85) respectively.
Whitakers's time was a KSC record. Sophomore
Meghan Wilson (Torrington, Conn.) finished fourth
in the 50 breast (31.70).
Seniors Kristine Trutor (Holden, Mass.)
and Alea Paddock (Newbury, N.H.) also had big
days. Trutor swam to a first place finish in the 200 back
(2:09.15) and Paddock won the 200 I.M. in the school record time of
2:11.95.
The Owls picked up major points with record setting swims in the
relays. Trutor, Whitaker, Paddock, and Umbarger won the 200
free relay (1:36.89) by almost five seconds. O'Leary joined
forces with Trutor, Paddock, and Umbarger to win the 400 medley
relay (3:57.00).
